OVERVIEW
The legend of the first ring made in history and believed to be from the gods, Shang-Chi is a fantastical tale of great power and immortality. It tells of a woman named Han Shi (possibly Queen K’ung Fu) who was granted the ability to transform the sky, animals, humans, and other things into weapons of magic by being born with an arm that had been split off in the womb, the right hand of her father, King Wu in ancient Chinese mythology. This was done by cutting off her left hand and applying it as an adhesive onto an object of steel called ‘Dragon Head’ (which in fact was a symbol of Emperor Chang’s reign). Her husband Han Yuen (The Horsemen), however, did not live long and they are both forgotten by history, Han Shi is now known as Ma Dongsheai, Princess of Dragon Head. However, her son Shang-Chi (The Tale of Heaven and Hell) features heavily in every part of the epic, with one main character appearing in more than 20 instances throughout in the story. The most important part came first when we get a glimpse of both gods. We learn of their respective roles during the creation of two different beings by a god. In some cases these creatures were created for the purposes of protecting the moon or sun and bringing life and light to those around them, such as a dragon to hunt down bad spirits or a human to make a wish on behalf of the person they loved, often they would be protected by a goddess or priestess who would then protect them in whatever manner they desired. At least this is what the Chinese belief was at the time. The second example is where a boy who has been killed by another child, but also by his mother, becomes determined to revenge herself. He seeks out the same creature he murdered and makes him eat his own flesh, while making him swear that if he ever tried to kill anyone again, it should be his mother. Once we see this monster in action in front of King Wu, we can already begin to understand its role as both a protector and avenger and we can begin to understand the origin of so called Shang-Chi (The Goddess of Eternity), as she is the only person whom King Wu respects and the only person whom all wishes to please because she is considered to be the embodiment of good luck and strength, her family is wealthy and powerful and the queen’s daughter has many followers and she is seen as extremely benevolent, she used to give people the best gift they could ever hope for and she always treated everyone alike, so no matter how poor he was, he never had to compete against any man and he would always receive a reward because he would always be the hero. I believe that our modern society has taken over the religious beliefs of the Greek Gods. I believe that there are three reasons that drive so much of what is today’s religion. One reason is that most religions have started out as simple religions, based around Jesus Christ himself who died for our sins and resurrected us to the grace of God, we also know that Christianity does not come from a very strong core, in my opinion. There is a lack of leaders in certain churches who try and influence our lives away from Jesus Christ, and Christian leadership is too involved with politics for me to really believe in it myself. Secondly, Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, who was enlightened by the Buddha himself, although he was later punished and executed for his actions he was still respected and looked up to. Lastly, Hinduism came back into existence during the middle ages which began when Aryans invaded India and Hinduism became a state religion and there is still a great pride in Hindus and to be able to look your enemy dead in the eyes is amazing, not one person in the world can be completely evil and there is nothing wrong about that, you must be good to win the battles and suffer the consequences that occur along the way, so I personally do not believe in ghosts like I was growing up but instead the idea that someone died before they existed and that it is a punishment from on high for not being good enough for heaven, which is true I believe in karma and karma is a force that will never stop working till you die. All in all, though, I feel that Christian traditions do contribute to our culture today in providing a sense of peace and happiness, which is what the original religion provided. I believe that by being Christian and having a strong faith, we can keep ourselves away from those of other cultures and we can prevent people from living a lifestyle full of violence and war in favour of peacefulness and harmony. Even though there are some similarities, I feel that Christian faith does have flaws and I personally disagree with many Christians beliefs. Therefore, there are plenty of areas in which there is a need for change and religion plays a large role in shaping how people think and feel about their communities.
